1 / 3Pastes El Billar is the kind of place that makes you wonder why you ever paid $15 for a sandwich back home. Tucked in the mining town of Real del Monte—the birthplace of Mexico’s famous “paste,” a meat-filled pastry brought over by Cornish miners in the 1800s—this humble spot serves pure golden pockets of joy. We tried one of each dessert paste, and the apple one was so good it probably deserves its own saint’s day. The place is cheap, cheerful, and full of history you can literally taste. If you leave hungry, that’s on you—not the miners, not the pastry, and definitely not the apple one.
