Giving is easy to reduce to money, but some of the best things people have given us probably never showed up on a receipt. Someone listened. Someone taught us something. Someone made an introduction, showed up with dinner, shared what they knew, or stayed a little longer than they had to.
What we have to offer changes throughout a life. Sometimes there is money but no time. Sometimes there is plenty of time and twelve dollars in the bank. There are seasons for sharing experience, opening a home, carrying something heavy, making someone laugh, or simply paying attention when another person needs to be heard.
The strange thing about giving is that it rarely seems to move in only one direction. Generosity connects people. Teaching teaches the teacher. Helping someone can rearrange our own perspective. Maybe giving is less about having something extra and more about noticing what is already in our hands.
Work is a strange arrangement. We give away a huge portion of our waking lives, and in return someone gives us money. Obviously, the money matters.
