As a man who is approximately 40% German according to 23andMe (and 100% proud of it), stepping into The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery & Biergarten felt like coming home to a place I’ve never actually been—but spiritually belong.
The biergarten is wunderbar—I don’t know what that means, but I say it with confidence because I’ve spent enough time here that I’ve accidentally developed a German accent without ever learning the language. I shout “Prost!” before every sip and it just feels right. Nobody questions it. This is a safe space for men like me who own at least two pairs of lederhosen and aren’t afraid to wear them on a Saturday afternoon in Charlotte.
The beer? Das ist perfect. Crisp, cold, and brewed with enough purity to make my ancestors high-five each other in heaven.
And then there’s Hammerschlagen. I don’t like to brag (yes I do), but I dominate. I’ve shattered egos with a single strike. I’ve been asked if I was born with a hammer in my hand. The staff won’t confirm it, but there’s a rumor they renamed the stump in the back “Der Joseph” after me. You be the judge.
Whether you’re 40% German or just 100% into good beer, great food, and friendly competition in suspenders—Olde Meck is das place to be.
