For an ordinary Tuesday

Nothing is wrong. That is exactly when I forget to be grateful.

There is nothing to report today, which is exactly the problem.

No diagnosis came back, no argument needs repairing, nobody is in a hospital, nothing is overdue in a way that will cost me something I can’t get back. The car started. The kids are asleep in the next room, breathing the ordinary, unremarkable way they’ve been breathing every night this year. I have, by any measure I’d use in a harder season, nothing to ask for.

And that’s when I go quiet. On the hard days I know exactly how to show up — specific, urgent, honest about the size of what I need. On a day like this one I don’t know what to say, so mostly I say nothing, and a Tuesday like this passes the way plain water passes through you, unnoticed, doing its quiet work without asking to be thanked for it.

So let this be what it is: not a request, because I don’t have one today. Just an accounting. The heat came on when I asked it to. Someone I love called for no reason and we talked for eleven minutes about nothing important. I was bored for a stretch of the afternoon, which I used to treat as a problem and have started to recognize as a small luxury — boredom is what’s left over when nothing urgent is chewing on you.

I don’t want to wait for the hard season to remember how to pay attention like this. I don’t want gratitude to be the thing I only reach for once the emergency has passed and I’m assessing the damage. Let me practice it now, on the day that gave me nothing to practice it on. Especially on that day. That’s the one I’ll forget.

Nothing is wrong. Let that be enough, once, before it stops being true.

Pick one night. Send the text yourself.

Who has been in your life long enough that you have stopped noticing them? Ask them for a standing Thursday. Not a plan — a habit.
